GUIDELINES
- Side plate: The salad plate is placed on top of the dinner plate.
- Cutlery: Fork to the left, knife and any spoon to the right of the plate. For multiple courses; starter cutlery should be placed on the outside, main course cutlery on the inside, and dessert cutlery above the plate.
- Glasses: The water glass is placed diagonally above the knife, and the wine glass diagonally to the right, behind the water glass.
- Napkin: Placed to the left, or on top of the plate (depending on the fold). If the napkin has a decoration (e.g., ribbon, flower, napkin ring), it's often best placed on top of the plate.
- Placemat: If a placemat is used, place about 2–3 cm from the edge of the table.
TIPS
- Layer different elements and pay extra attention to details to create a warm and inviting atmosphere for your guests.
- Mix solid-colored dinner plates with patterned side plates for a harmonious balance in your table setting.
- Writing the evening’s menu and your guests names on decorative menu and placement cards adds a personal touch!

GUIDELINES
- Plates: A deep starter bowl, if used, adds dimension and is placed on top of the side plate, which in turn sits on the dinner plate.
- Cutlery: Forks to the left of the plate, knives and any larger spoons to the right. The dessert spoon is placed horizontally above the plate.
- Glasses: The water glass is placed above the knife, slightly to the right. The white wine glass is positioned diagonally to the right of the water glass. The red wine glass is placed diagonally above and behind the water and white wine glasses.
- Napkin: Placed to the left or on top of the plate, depending on the fold. If the napkin has a decoration (e.g., ribbon, flower, napkin ring), it's often best placed on top of the plate.
- Bread plate & bread knife: Positioned above the forks, slightly to the left.
TIPS
- Work with the layering principle as in a more formal setting – use placemats or a tablecloth, or both!
- Dare to add flair with embroidery on a luxurious linen napkin if the rest of your table setting is more minimal.
- For a more formal dinner, an elegant, handwritten menu card can be a beautiful and personal touch at each place setting.
